Embracing Your Uniqueness

“The fastest way to kill something special is to compare it to something else.” -Danny Silk

The Lord’s message to humanity’s uniqueness can be found in our bodies. Everyone has a unique fingerprint, skin pigmentation, and even birth marks. Of these, I am most fascinated with the fingerprint, the mark on our lives that is more unique than our DNA. Interestingly, no two are the same. In fact, even though identical twins share the same DNA, they will never have the same fingerprint. It’s been said that there is a one in 60 billion chance that our fingerprint will match up with someone else’s.

Currently, there are approximately 7 billion people alive in the world right now. Let me write that number out...7,000,000,000! This means we would have to wait and tally up 8 generations to even see if there was a match to you. Let that sink in...there is no way for anyone out there to have the same fingerprint as you. How cool is that!

Scientific studies show that fingerprints (patterns known as whorls, valleys, and ridges on the finger) are formed by maternal pressure, while in the mother’s womb. Even though our bodily appearance changes, our fingerprints never change. I think it’s awesome that when Yahweh formed man from the dust, He left His fingerprint on us. In other words, the original Artist made the only one out there. I’ve heard it said, “When you were made, they threw away the mold.” The same could be said about us, His delighted in creation. He did this so we could bring a specific aspect of His nature to the table. When He formed us in our mother’s womb, He indeed tossed the mold.

“You formed my innermost being, shaping my delicate inside and my intricate outside, and wove them all together in my mother’s womb. I thank You God, for making me so mysteriously complex! Everything you do is marvelously breathtaking! It simply amazes me to think about it! How thoroughly you know me, Lord! You even shaped every bone in my body, when You created me in the secret place, carefully, skillfully shaping me from nothing to something! You saw who You created me to be, before I became me! Before I’d ever seen the light of day, the number of days You planned for me, were all recorded in Your book.” Psalm 139:13-16 (TPT)

One of the most powerful dynamics of lifting our hands in praise is, we are extending and offering our uniqueness to God. In other words, as we extend our fingerprints, we are offering our unique stamp of approval to Him in loving adoration. This is why no two “praisers” are the same. In fact, no two songs are the same. Think about it...there are only 12 notes in music, yet we are continually producing new sounds and composing new songs. What one generation heard will be different than what the previous did. In light of this, I think it’s interesting that the Lord raised up 12 unique tribes and 12 diverse disciples to represent Him and to establish His Kingdom on earth. The song locked up in each of their lives’ would be what He longed to bring forth. Being diversely different, they carried something that the other was missing in the grander scheme of things. As my brother Ryan would say, “Diversity isn’t a curse, it’s God’s gift to us.”

“In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Luke 15:10 (NASB)

I think it’s quite amazing that the angles rejoice when one gets saved. Think about it, heaven throws a party when one part of creation gets redeemed. Perhaps this is because a new and unique song is entering the realm of heaven. In other words, the hosts of heaven (seraphim, cherubim, four living creatures and 24 elders) get a new singing partner. Heaven gets more intense in sound when a soul enters through the door. Therefore, God desires to bring your melody into the fellowship of the angels. Heaven is after your song.

“The heart that has been changed by the gospel sings the praise of the Savior... He is our new song.” -John Piper
